This is, incidentally, the reason Bruker spectrometers save NMR data in folder structures that seem alien to a Windows user and most of the files lack file extensions - because this wasn't as standard in the original OS. TopSpin was originally developed to run on that Unix OS, which was some obscure "Linux-but-not-really" affair. Our NMR manager told me that one of the reasons TopSpin is so clunky and obtuse is that, back in the mid-1990s, Bruker would send you a computer with some random Unix operating system when you bought a spectrometer.
